Thinking outside of the box

In the absence of an overwhelming need to get something done, do you:

  1. Take extra moments to reflect on your task at hand so as to think of different, perhaps better, ways to do it?
  2. Do it in the “known-quantity” way, regardless of elegance, and move on?
  3. Something in between?

I’d like to think that I’m case 1. I’m blessed enough to have a job that gives me a great deal of latitude in how I approach my work, so I can take that extra time. I think it makes me a better coder overall. Of course, everything goes out the window when it needs to be done now.

Again, I have a hard time contrasting that against my desire to GSD.

In other news, I’m moving to a new apartment this weekend. Someone asked me how I might decorate it, and aside from a telecom rack full of servers and switches, I’m at a loss. If I could somehow mount a big HDTV to the rack, I could have a NOC in my living room…
