I Made Soup
December 16th, 2005 | by Sean |I’m on a mission to rid my kitchen of really old stuff. I’m doing this in the most economically feasible way: by eating said old stuff.
With that in mind, today I made soup. I sweated some carrots, broccoli, and red onion (coarsely chopped) in olive oil. I added chunks of chicken that had been defrosted in the microwave and half a cup of white long-grained rice. I let that go for a few minutes while I heated up a pot. Into the pot went the aforementioned mixer, the rest of my beef broth, some water, a little lemon juice, 20 or 30 grinds of fresh pepper, some salt, dried thyme, dried oregano, and some bay leafs. While that started to heat up, I prepared a roux (which ultimately landed in the soup).
I flirted with the seasonings a bit and ended up with a pretty hearty and tasty soup. Not exactly restaurant-quality nor something I’d make for a date – but I like it. I think it could still use a little brightening…
Then I wrapped some Christmas gifts (Xmas -> XXXmas, it’s like 3-times the Christ!). Need to figure out what to get for brother. He’s a freshly-minted 21-year old, but doesn’t drink. What is a big brother to do?

The big brother should buy little brother a 6 pack of beer, or some alcholic eggnog. With a videogame.
Merry X-mas
