ChargeTracker NextGen

November 8th, 2004 | by Sean |

Dan offered a 205 project team to work on ChargeTracker if I were to present the idea to the class and be available to answer questions throughout the quarter. I have to say, I am liking this idea more and more:

  • ChargeTracker is more or less specifically aimed at students. It really helps simplify life. So students can actually use whatever they come up with.
  • It’s a simple idea, but not so simple when you actually want to implement it. There are a lot of “business rules” that need careful design. It should be a good exercise for newish coders (205 is usually a direct follow-on to 103).
  • I don’t have to do it!

What an idea, eh?

I like that idea. Would it be under the GPL? Or would Cal Poly own it?

That’s an interesting question. I would suspect as it has no real commercial value (it’s basically an open platform) that the issue is moot anyway. Practically speaking, Cal Poly would own it unless they release their rights beforehand. Regardless, who really cares? If not CP, it’ll belong to the students who write it. Hopefully they’ll opt for some sort of unrestrictive licensing scheme; perhaps the BSD license. :-)
